ABOUT RCSS
Drawing inspiration from founder, St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a great
visionary, reformer and religious leader of the 19th century, the
Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) were the first indigenous religious
congregation for men in India. The CMI have dedicated themselves to
education at all levels. At present, their mission of education
comprises a vast network of 448 institutions - including over 200
schools, 14 university affiliated colleges, 1 engineering college, 12
technical institutes, 1 university, 1 medical college, 3 B.Ed. colleges,
5 special schools, 18 non formal educational institutions and 17
cultural centres spread all over India and beyond.
Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Rajagiri) was established as a
result of the indefatigable industry and foresight of the CMI. The
School of Social Work is one of the pioneering institutions in South
India, establishing programmes and setting the standards for the field.
The School of Management is nationally ranked and recognized. The School
of Computer Science and the School of Library and Information Science
maintain the axiomatic spirit of Rajagiri - ‘Relentlessly Towards
Excellence’.
Rajagiri has successfully established and maintained the apt ambience
for learning and the highest level of academic performance by providing
state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities in these institutions.
International partnerships have been established with reputed Management
and Social Work institutions across the globe. This allows the College,
the faculty and the students to stay abreast of the constant changes
occurring as Rajagiri is becoming truly global, with its graduates being
placed and working around the world.
RAJAGIRI COLLEGE HISTORY
- Rajagiri College of Social Sciences had its beginnings in 1955, as the Department of Social Work at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, and was the fruition of the long cherished dream of Rev. Fr. Francis Sales CMI, the Founder- Director.
- 1960 – The Diploma in Social Services received affiliation from the University of Kerala.
- 1961 - The department started a two year Masters Degree Course in Social Work (MSW) with specialization in Personnel Management, Industrial Relations and Labour Welfare and was affiliated to the University of Kerala.
- The Department was shifted to the present Rajagiri campus at Kalamassery, as the Sacred Heart College's off-campus Post Graduate Institute of Social Work. The Institute was recognised by the University of Kerala as a centre for university examinations.
- The report of the Commission under the chairmanship of Dr. M. V. Pylee, appointed to inspect the campus at Kalamassery, was submitted to the University of Kerala.
- 1967 - the Post-Graduate Department of Social Work was shifted from Sacred Heart College, Thevara, to Rajagiri, Kalamassery, as an off-campus study centre of the college
- 1968 - A men's hostel was completed on the Rajagiri campus.
- 1969 - Ladies were admitted to the course. The second specialization in Social Work - Family and Child Welfare - was introduced
- 1970 - The training of teachers for the National Service Scheme in the colleges affiliated to all the universities in Kerala was started.
- 1971 - A ladies' hostel under the management of the Adoration Sisters was started
- 1972 - A research wing under the name Research Institute was set up
- Between 1969 and 1980 - specializations such as Family and Child Welfare, Community Development, Medical & Psychiatric Social Work and Social Welfare Administration were introduced to the programme.
- 1980 - The Post Graduate Institute of Social Work was separated from the Sacred Heart College, Thevara as an independent college with the present name of Rajagiri College of Social Sciences and affiliated to the University of Kerala. The Department was raised to the status of an independent college affiliated to the University of Kerala and the college was named as “Rajagiri College of Social Sciences”.
- 1982 - Rajagiri College of Social Sciences was registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific, Charitable Act III of 1955
- 1983 - The Anganwadi Workers Training Centre (AWTC) started functioning at the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences
- 1984 - The College expanded its horizons with the separation of the Personnel Management specialization into a full fledged Post Graduate Programme called M.A. (PM & IR).
- 1986 – Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University on permanent basis
- 1988 - The college was recognized as a Centre for Doctoral Research via Order No. AC.AII-1/504/87 dtd 6.5.1988 for Social Work, Sociology and allied Social Sciences, under M.G. University, Kottayam, Kerala.
- 1988 – Recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 12(B) of UGC Act 1956
- 1993 - College was recognized as a Centre for Doctoral Research for Management Studies Via Order No. Ac.A.II-3/1175/92 dt.30-11-1993
- 1995 - the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) programme was offered with affiliation to the Mahatma Gandhi University.
- 2000 - Rajagiri College was accredited with FIVE STAR status from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Govt. of India
- 2001 - The Rajagiri School of Computer Science was established by the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences to offer a 3-year full time post-graduate programme in Computer Applications (MCA).
- 2001 - Re-scheduled the thrust of the DSS course and changed the title as Post Graduate Diploma in Administration of Human Services (PGDAHS).
- 2001 - Keeping in pace with the development in management education, the management programme MA (PM & IR) was revamped and transformed into MHRM. Along with MBA, the MHRM programme was shifted to the new valley campus at Kakkanad.
- 2002 - The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programme, first of its kind in Kerala, was introduced by the School of Social Work.
- 2003 - The college achieved a record hundred percent placement for students enrolled in the MBA programme. Today, the alumni are placed with top companies in India and across the globe.
- 2004 - AICTE awarded its approval for the intake of an additional batch of sixty students for the MBA program bringing the total strength to 120 for the 2004 batch. The enrollment was done on the basis of the scores obtained in the Management Aptitude Test [MAT] conducted by All India Management Association [AIMA], New Delhi, followed by Group Discussion and Interview conducted by RCBS. The thrust was to have a heterogeneous group of students drawn from different parts of the country. Since 2004, the same pattern is being followed in the admission process. New faculty members with excellent qualifications and wide experience have been carefully selected to establish and maintain standards of excellence even as the intake of students for the MBA program increased.
- During the academic year 2005-06, Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences (BLISc) programme was introduced under the School of Library Science, taking into account the need for professionals in the field of information management in all fields of academics and research.
- 2007 - Rajagiri College was Re-accredited with A+ status from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Govt. of India
- 2008-09 - The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme was introduced under Rajagiri Business School, a stand alone management institute with AICTE approval.
- 2009 - The MBA, MHRM and PGDM programmes offered in the Valley campus at Kakkanad were brought under the umbrella of Rajagiri Centre for Business Studies.
- 2013 - Rajagiri College was Re-accredited with A grade with CGPA of 3.70 on 4 point scale by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Govt. of India
- 2013 – Government of Kerala sanctioned an Aided Additional batch of MSW course with a strength of 25 nos. (2013-14 academic year)
- 2014 - Rajagiri College of Social Sciences granted Autonomous status by UGC.
- 2016 - Rajagiri College of Social Sciences listed by UGC as Centre with Potential for Excellence in Education.
Rajagiri School of Social Work
Rajagiri School of Social Work ( RSOW ) had its humble beginning in 1955 with a Diploma Programme in social services. Later in 1964 the school started a Masters Programme in Social Work with specialisations in Family and Child Welfare, Community development and Medical and Psychiatric Social Work. The MSW Programme of the school earned a wide acclaim in a short span of time. The School also expanded by taking up social work projects by establishing different Live Labs, and Research and Training in Social Work and related fields.Objectives
- To impart necessary theoretical inputs on the philosophy, values, methods, fields and approaches of human service profession and human resources management
- To sensitize young professionals to the social issues by developing social awareness
- To develop proficiency in helping skills and effective intervention strategies
- To develop an insight into one's own self and the purpose of professional self in the helping profession
- To sharpen skills in conceptualization, analysis, interpretation and management
BSW - Objectives
- To prepare young men and women at graduate level to take up Social Work as a profession.
- To sensitise young professionals to social issues by developing social awareness.
- To Provide the prospective professionals as in-depth awareness of the social reality, and to sensitize them towards the social and development issues.
- To meet the demand for qualified, committed and trained Social Workers in welfare and developmental agencies in the country.
BSW - Admission Process
Duration of the Course: 6 Semesters (3Years)Academic Eligibility:
Candidate who have passed plus two or equivalent examination or an examination recognized by the M.G. University as equivalent thereto.
Candidates awaiting results of the qualifying examinations are also eligible to apply for admission provided they shall produce the proof of qualification on or before the date of admission by the College.
Mode of Selection:
Admission to BSW course of Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous) is based on the marks of qualifying exam and interview conducted by the college.
